Jalapeno Poppers Recipe

November 7, 2016 by 42 Comments

Mr. Handsome has a thing for jalapeno poppers. He has only eaten them a couple times, but every once in a while he will randomly say, “You should learn how to make jalapeno poppers.” Well, Aldi had jalapeno peppers on sale for 99 cents, so I figured I might as well take a stab at making poppers.

The recipes I found online didn’t sound all that great to me, so I made my own up, and it was a hit! The prep time was only five minutes.

I recommend using rubber gloves to make these tasty morsels. (I didn’t, and my skin was burning by the end.)

Jalapeno peppers

Ingredients

  • Cream cheese
  • Feta cheese optional
  • Panko bread crumbs
  • Paprika
  • Garlic powder
  • Uncooked bacon

Instructions

  1. While wearing gloves, wash jalapeno peppers, and remove stems and seeds. Slice in half lengthwise.

  2. Using a knife, fill each jalapeno half with as much cream cheese as desired. I used about 2 teaspoons per jalapeno half. Sprinkle a few crumbles of feta cheese on each pepper, as well as bread crumbs (1/4-1/2 teaspoon per jalapeno half).

  3. Sprinkle peppers with as much paprika and garlic powder as desired.

  4. Cover each pepper half with a piece of uncooked bacon. You'll only need once slice of bacon per two or three pepper halves.

  5. Place a metal cookie cooling rack on top of a cookie sheet, and place peppers on top of rack. Bake 25-30 minutes (until golden brown) at 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

  6. Allow poppers to cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy, and be sure to wash your hands well when you're finished eating to prevent your skin from burning.

Are the bread crumbs really crispy? It's under the bacon, so I suppose the bacon fat might make it a bit wet?

The bread crumbs weren't super crispy, but they weren't soggy either (just perfect, in my opinion). I only added a tiny amount of bread crumbs to each piece of pepper.

Is the panko soggy because of the bacon fat?

      Hi Josée,

Nope, it didn't turn out soggy. It wasn't super crispy, but it definitely wasn't soggy. I found it quite perfect. 🙂

I do cream cheese, cheese, and seasonings and fry it.
I never thought of doing it w/bacon.

Your husband should learn how to follow the recipe himself, instead of relying on you to make them for him.

Ugh, can't eat jalapenos for the very reason you mentioned, the burn! They do to my mouth and stomach what they did to your hands. I don't know how anyone can manage consuming these little green sticks of dynamite!

Green sticks of dynamite is a good way to describe them. Lol. Perhaps some varieties are hotter than others. These were hot, but not too bad. I definitely wouldn't have wanted them any hotter!

"You should learn how to make jalapeno poppers." Are you kidding? If my husband said such a thing to me I'd reply. "Sorry, you said you're making jalapeno poppers?" Marriage is a partnership, just because you're the wife doesn't mean you are entirely responsible for food shopping, planning and prep.
    PS They look great!

Yeah I have to say, even if you are the primary cook in the house, that should have been phrased as a request and not a demand!!

To each their own, each couple is different ! If Ellie agrees to shop and cook for her husband, it's her choice and we must respect it. And based on her posts, Mr Handsome seems loving and caring, not an authoritarian husband 🙂 Hello to everyone from France, Anne

Thank you for the compliments. 🙂 His tone of voice made it a request, not a demand. (I should have explained that better.) But he really is a good cook and will help if I ask him. He always does the grilling, and he makes a great bacon and eggs. But I definitely enjoy it more than he does, and he doesn't cook as healthy as I do (lol), so that's why I do most of the cooking.

What wrong with you people saying that men should cook. When your married wife's do the cooking and men bring home the bacon.

Ellie sorry that people are so rude and mean.

One of things I have always liked about this blog is that Ellie is open minded. She seems to have conservative values but she never judges anyone who is more liberal. She is also smart. She graduated in college in 2.5 years if I remember right. Ellie chose her marriage and her life and she is happy. Therefore we owe her the same courtesy of non judgement. Each person's marriage is different and hopefully the one they want. In my marriage, my husband and I split the cooking because I made it clear beforehand that was important to me. If I had agreed to do it all, I'm sure he wouldn't have complained. It seems that Ellie does the cooking because she enjoys it, so we need to respect her choices in the same way she respects others and not push our values on her.

So you are expected to be at your husbands beck and call, and answer to all his demands, while he can't be bothered to learn to follow a recipe?

These look really good, jalapeños and bacon are two things I like. My husband and I both love food and we both frequently think of things that I should try making (I do most of the cooking but he'll do the dishes for me because I hate dishes). Sometimes I make things off my list and sometimes I make things off his and we both enjoy the food together. It's our dynamic and it works for us. I would be willing to bet Ellie and her husband are similar. Based on what she has shared with us about her life, her husband sounds like an absolute sweetheart who would never demand anything from her.

I'm intimidated by them too. Haha. These were hot, but not crazy hot. I would recommend looking into different varieties of jalapeños and then taking small bites if you do decide to make them.

These look good! I like to make them with banana peppers so they aren't so hot, and just throw in a few jalapenos. I love when my husband tells me to make something he likes, I love delighting him with good cooking. He doesn't have any cooking skills but has lots other skills I don't have a clue of, and does so much other things for our family! I'm glad I can serve him that way and it is also very appreciated by him. So Ellie, keep going… love him, spoil him and keep your marriage alive! I can say, after 8 years it just keeps getting better!

Banana peppers are a great idea. We bought a plant that was supposedly a banana pepper plant, but it must have been mislabeled because the peppers were light green and quite bitter.

Thanks for sharing that bit of marriage advice. 🙂
