Would You Buy a Taxidermy Bat?

March 18, 2024 by 15 Comments

When we went down to Gulf Shores, Alabama, last fall, we visited a festival. It was your typical festival, complete with music, food, and craft booths. But one booth was selling something that didn’t seem like the type of thing you would typically see at a festival (or anywhere, for that matter). Framed taxidermy bats. I mean, who would buy one of those?

The tent also had other framed decorations, like snake skins, beetles, moths, and animal skulls. I got out of there as quickly as I could. Have any of you seen that kind of thing for sale? Or do you happen to know anyone who decorates their home with such things?

That’s a definite no for me.

To each their own. Some people enjoy seeing those things. There are practices and religions that display nature symbols. To speak as though that’s weird is like someone saying crosses or stars and crescents are weird. An open mind is best.

I have seen things like that before! I think they are very cool and if I had the money, would totally buy.

I do however, have a bat preserved in a jar of alcohol! Didn’t cost me anything though because it was found dead outside by a family member.

Also have a painted raccoon bone, shed skin from a thorny lizard, and my gall stones.

No, I wouldn’t buy this, but at least it’s a better topic than someone’s birth story and breastfeeding!

If there are better things in your mind, you are free to pursue those things. By what power are you held where you don’t like the topics.
Topics that others interested in the wife lifestyle would hope to find on this blog.
But maybe other parts of this blog are to your liking. Therefore you get important insight into yourself.
      Thank you for sharing.
I find Ellie’s blog quite comprehensive of the topics one would expect here and personally I enjoy reading all the posts.
But i respect your viewpoint here too.
Thank-you to Ellie, Mr Handsome and all comments.

Well if such topics bother you then ignore them and find something else to read. Topics here are not required reading and there won’t be a quiz at the end.

I agree, quite odd! Around $50-$80, so not cheap.

Bats are protected species under the Endangered Species Act. We found this out when my grandmother had one that got into her house. The exterminator couldn’t kill it, but he could catch and release to a better place only since it was in her house! If anyone tried to kill it, the law says jail time and fines of $2000. She also had to get rabies shots since you don’t know if the bat bit you in your sleep, which are painful shots! We then had to fix the tiniest crack in her fireplace where they think the bat got in.

At any rate, I am surprised with them being protected species that people can sell them. I wouldn’t take a chance buying one because I don’t want the fine or jail time for someone thinking I killed and took them to a taxidermist!

I could be that in some states bats are not protected but I don’t know. I find them rather creepy!

I think this weirdness and cost helps validate paying admissions to zoos, etc. We get the unusual experiences and someone else does all of the upkeep. (Funny Grandparents typically say that’s what they love!)

No way would I buy those things. I’ve been in plenty of homes with deer heads.

PLEASE do not buy those. Those bats didn’t die of natural cause they are killed for the only purpose to be sold as ornament. It is a real plague in bat conservation, just look up bat taxidermy ethics, though you may want to ignore the second article as it is full of misinformations while claiming to know more than scientists who dedicated their lives to protect bats.
A lot of bat protection groups and scientists are trying to raise awareness on this problem. It is pushing bat to extinction, painted bat for example were least concern until 2024 they are now considered near threatened and killing to fulfill the growing demand for bat taxidermy is their main threat.
