Nashville Terrain Race

October 7, 2022 by 14 Comments

At the end of summer, Mr. Handsome took part in the Terrain Race here in Nashville. Little Buddy, Littlest Buddy, and I–along with my sister-in-law–watched Daddy and his brother run a 5K and complete about 20 obstacles.

In addition to basic ladders, ropes, and walls to climb, some of the obstacles involved trekking through mud. But the most epic one of all was the mud pit. Participants got down on their bellies and crawled through a pool of mud that was about a foot deep. There were ropes directly overhead that you had to stay below, so if you did it right, you ended up covered in mud from head to toe.

Most of the obstacles were set up in the woods, where spectators weren’t able to go. The mud pit was off in the distance, so I didn’t get any good pictures. Hopefully the description paints a nice picture in your mind.

Have you ever participated in any sort of race with obstacles? Would you crawl through a mud pit?

Mr. Handsome, if your teeth made a dent, it’s fake!

Have fun, but be aware – everyone I know who did competitive athletic things in their 20’s and 30’s are having joints replaced in their 50’s and 60’s, if they didn’t tear tendons by then. Road racing is especially tough on feet, knees, and hips. Obstacle courses can damage shoulders. There are other things you can do to be active but not beat up your original parts. The replacement parts are no fun to get and never exactly like the originals.

My friend had to have surgery in both wrists because of riding his bike so much. The handlebar position did him in. He did 100 mile fundraising rides and such until the pain caught up with him.

I would probably crawl through the mud only for some dough!

I would not crawl through mud. I have heard of people getting nasty infections (mostly eye infections) from taking part in mud runs.

I would wonder what sort of animals had been in that mud before me. Ewww.

        – Not to mention all sorts of molds and spores and other yucky stuff. That’s why it’s called dirt!

I know someone who is 58 and having knee surgery In November. This is his second time he had his knee done 10 years ago.

No I would never do a course with mud. Deer and animals poop in it.

Can’t believe a dentist is biting metal. After my dentist specifically told me I need to stop removing nails and opening beer bottles with my teeth!

Haha don’t worry, he’s not actually biting it, just gently putting his teeth on it.
