Let’s Talk about Coffee

August 3, 2020 by 27 Comments

Last year, I shared that Mr. Handsome and I had recently become coffee drinkers. He drinks a cup every morning to start his day. I usually wake up with a burst of energy–I guess that means I’m a morning person. But when my eyelids start to droop in the early afternoon, I’ll have my first cup.

In the summer I enjoy iced coffee. If I’m really on top of things, I’ll use coffee ice cubes to cool it down. Or I’ll make it in the morning and stick it in the fridge to chill. If it’s been a rough day, I’ll just add my cream and milk and drink it lukewarm. Not too bad, actually.

I don’t think I’ve ever had more than one cup in a day. Every once in a while, Mr. Handsome will drink two. If I’m not terribly tired, I’ll drink decaf or half-caf.

We enjoy whole bean coffee, although I admit that I usually grind a small container of beans every week to have on hand. I know that the authentic way to drink coffee is to grind the beans on the spot, though.

Right now, our favorite regular coffee is Dallmayr Espresso D’Oro Whole Bean from World Market. A friend gave us a small container of Donut House Medium Roast as a fundraiser for St. Jude Children’s Hospital, and that was fantastic.

If I’m drinking decaf, it’s Kicking Horse Dark Decaf from Amazon, which uses the Swiss water process. Apparently that’s the most natural way to decaffeinate coffee beans.

What is your favorite type/brand of coffee?

No coffee any more, it gives me heartburn. No black tea either, only green or herbal. And it has to be decaf. It’s fun getting old – you’ll see, if you’re lucky.

I LOVE coffee! And I LOVE helping others! So this coffee is a win-win in my book. Not only does it taste amazing, but this organization is incredible at helping refugees earn an honest living. https://shop.mercyhouseglobal.org/products/new-mercy-house-coffee-blend?_pos=2&_sid=cff78850e&_ss=r

I’m not a coffee drinker. I do think I could learn to like black coffee if I wanted to, though, so perhaps when I become a parent and am sleep deprived, I’ll get into it! But never with cream, because I have a weird aversion to drinking milk. And adding sugar seems like unnecessary calories.

I don’t add anything. Black coffee is good. I’ve heard it’s a genetic thing, if you like bitter tasting foods or not. I do – black bread, dark beer, dark chocolate, and black coffee.

I like to talk about coffee. I drink Folger’s decaf medium roast coffee. Every morning I crawl out of bed and brew 1 or 2 cups of coffee in my little coffee pot,got to have my morning coffee. I tried cold coffee, but didn’t like it. I do enjoy drinking hot coffee more in the fall and winter. Oh and I can’t drink it black I always add a little french vanilla and a little sugar.

I crawled out of bed this morning to make my cup of coffee and to read my newspaper. This is what it said under Hints from Heloise- Finland ranks as the country with the highest number of coffee drinkers. They consume about 10 cups a day on average per person and are followed by Sweden, Switzerland, Germany, France and Italy. The United States ranks eighth with Americans drinking an average of three cups a day.

That’s very interesting! Thanks for sharing. Wow, 10 cups per day. I don’t think I even drink 10 cups of total liquids per day. Does Finland have really tasty coffee?

Wonder what the kidney stone rate is for Finland? Coffee drinking can contribute to calcium oxalate stones.

Thanks for sharing your favorite coffee bean brands! The decaf from Amazon sounds good! I’d like to try it.
I always have a cup in the morning and one in the afternoon. I do the pour over method. I also like cold brew. 😊 I have 4 little ones 5 years and under so I need the energy!

I enjoy your writings. Keep it up!

We buy Eight O’clock brand coffee either Original or Columbia.
I used to use flavored Coffeemate liquid but now I use 1/2 and 1/2 and sugar.
I drink coffee first thing in the morning because our cat comes to our bedroom door wanting breakfast.

I recently became a coffee drinker within the last few years. I don’t think caffeine has too big of an effect on me, so I typically drink coffee for the enjoyment of the taste! My favorite type is iced latte. The specialty seasonal drinks from a home decor/coffee shop not too far from where I live near the Nebraska/Kansas border are the best!! I do make my own iced coffee at home, but for some reason the ones I get from a coffee shop taste better to me, maybe because of the selection of flavored syrups they use.

I enjoyed reading your post about coffee. But I myself can’t stomach the taste. I’m a hot tea person and drink 2-3 cups of green or black tea per day!

I’m so sorry, but coffee is by far one of the worst drinks on earth. Right up there with tea and alcohol. Those all make me up chuck. But sometimes I wish I would have something to give me a pick-me-up!

Not even tea? Hmmm. I’m such a tea person-iced sweet tea with a meal(the best drink with a meal imo) hot black English tea in the morning, herbal teas in the evening…Not even herbal teas for you??? That would be the mildest of the mildest drink on earth, other than water! WHAT do you drink other than water then? I can’t imagine…

I’m super simple! We have a keurig and I have one cup of medium roast in the morning and one cup in the afternoon. On special occasion days or now and then, if we are out and about, I’ll get an iced coffee from McDonalds or Tim Hortons. It’s such a treat, I’m obsessed with iced coffee. But I try to keep to just the two cups for the most part 🙂 the coffee you make sounds superb!!

Try Mocha Java coffee beans. They’re not chocolate flavored, but named after the areas where the beans come from.

Coffee – love the smell, can’t stand the taste! I would need like four packs of sugar and a ton of milk, and then is it really coffee anymore? 😉

I do like chai lattes and some herbal teas, but coffee has never been on my list. My mom keeps telling me “Wait til you have kids! That’ll change!” Lol

Isn’t it funny how coffee smells so wonderful to lots of people who don’t actually like the taste of it! I like the smell and taste.

My luxury a few times week is Starbucks…I don’t have home internet and yes it may seem weird but I bring my laptop and enjoy a coffee drink and scroll through internet. I do have internet on my phone but my reception at home is only about 3 bars so all I can do is check weather or quick things.

I do occasionally go to Dunn Brothers and get a jug of the cold press and make iced coffee at home with a flavor syrup.

Speaking of coffee an interesting discussion for you to ask is people’s favorite ways to make coffee. I was watching tv and saw someone do pour over method. This way is suppose to make it less bitter and another tip they said is to add cinnamon to remove bitterness. They said a french press is good but it sometimes leaves grounds in the coffee. I also heard an aerator is a good way too!

PS>>I heard many people love McDonalds coffee that’s why you can buy at grocery store.

The pour over method, I’ve been doing for years! It does do something different than just a ol coffee maker. I react to it different, mainly not getting headaches like I would with cheap coffee from a coffee maker. My headaches stopped when I got a more expensive coffee bean and did the pour over. I even packed away the coffee maker as we weren’t using it anymore!

I love coffee but had to cut way back when I was diagnosed with an ulcer. So I only drink it as a rare treat if we are out with company. I’ve always loved the Fair Trade Coffees that we sell in church. It tastes wonderful, especially when you know you are supporting others with your purchase. I like it black, but I do like the Fair Trade Flavored Coffees. Hazelnut is my favorite flavor.
In the hot days of summer, I confess that I will splurge on a Tall Iced Mocha from Starbucks. I’ve tried making it at home, but it’s not the same. Ellie, I do love your idea of coffee ice cubes for iced coffee.
What I have always wondered, if any of our European Bloggers are on-line here, is why the coffee we had in Germany was so much more amazing than any coffee I have ever had!!! Is it the coffee; the water; the prep? No matter where we went, we were served wonderful coffee. It was 30 years ago and I have never had anything that came close to that awesome coffee.

I’ve always found it retarded that Americans buy those big cups of coffee on their way to work, instead of buying a coffee maker to use at home or work.

Love coffee and have 2 to 3 cups a day. Some recent scientific studies suggest moderate coffee drinking may have a positive benefit in preventing dementia, which is a nice bonus. My favs are the “Taste of” varieties of H-E-B’s Cafe Ole brand (that’s a TX-based grocery chain).

Right now I am currently enjoying Community Signature Coffee. I can only drink 1 cup of coffee per day. I drink ice coffee during the summer time and hot coffee the rest of the year.
