Fishing Failure

October 2, 2016 by 18 Comments

Many of you know that Mr. Handsome is an avid fisherman. I often accompany him on fishing outings because it gives us a chance to spend quality time together and enjoy the beauty of nature.

Being the wonderful husband that he is, Mr. Handsome decided a couple weeks ago that I needed my own fishing pole, so we stopped at Walmart to pick one up. I wanted something girly, maybe pink or purple, but we couldn’t find any good quality rods in those colors, so I settled on a brown one (the Shakespeare Micro Series Ultralight 4’6″, for all you fishing fanatics).

The brown was pretty dull, so I decided to glitz it up DIY-style. After testing the pole out to make sure I wanted to keep it, I grabbed a thick, blue Sharpie marker and colored the body of the rod.

The project only took about 10 minutes, and the color appeared more purple than red, which was fine with me. (Purple is my favorite color.)

As I was using my new glitzed-up fishing rod the following week, I noticed my hands turning slightly purple. “Oh well,” I thought, and continued fishing.

Unfortunately, towards the end of the evening, my line caught a snag, and the rod snapped in half when I was trying to free it, giving me a nice bruise as it flew back and whacked my arm.

So now I’m on the market for another fishing pole. I think I’ll go with the same one, since it was only $20 and worked quite well. Maybe this time I’ll use spray paint to glitz it up. 🙂

Yours is a unique idea, but maybe it will catch on!

I'd send that picture to Shakespeare (the rod people, not the bard) and let them know about the failure. They might be interested in testing why it failed, or they might help you get a new rod, or maybe even put you in charge of color design for their new rods!

Is that the Tallahatchie Bridge that Billy Joe McAllister jumped off of, in the background?

That's a great idea, although I wonder if maybe I just pulled too hard. I'll have to think about that one. 🙂

      Nope, it's not Tallahatchie Bridge.

I thought fishing rods were made to be tugged on and flex? Maybe yours had a defect?

Hate when things like that happen. I do think it is great that you are getting involved in something Mr Handsome as a passion for and sharing it with him.😃

Oh no! It's too bad that happened! How are you with fishing? Are you starting to enjoy it or do you just do it to spend time with your husband? I too like to tag along with my husband when he is gardening to spend time with him. Just curious… why would you think it would turn out red if the sharpie was blue?
Hopefully next time it will go much better!

      Hi there,

I'm starting to enjoy fishing more, but the best part is spending time with my hubby. What kinds of things do you grow in your garden? I think the color has to do with the original color of the rod. I agree that it's pretty odd!

We grow corn, pumpkin, zucchini, tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, tomatillo, cucumbers, five different kinds of hot peppers and a bunch of herbs. We also planted melons and watermelons but we didn't have luck with those.
