6-Mile Canoe Trip

August 13, 2016 by 34 Comments

Last weekend, we went on a six-mile canoe trip on a river in Middle Tennessee. We had five hours to complete the trip but still managed to arrive at the boat ramp just as the canoe rental shop was closing.

It was a beautiful river, and although the water was much too cold for swimming, we had a great time. For the first four-and-a-half hours, we floated slowly along while trying to catch fish. We then realized that the shop was closing in 30 minutes and we still had three miles to go!

My wrists are still not fully recovered, so I wasn’t much help when it came to paddling. But somehow Mr. Handsome was able to get us back just in the nick of time. (I’m not an experienced canoe-er, but I’d say that three miles in 30 minutes is pretty impressive with just one person paddling.)

Do you enjoy canoeing/kayaking? We had so much fun that we may try to find a used canoe on Craigslist, although we will probably wait until next summer.

Awful thing to do to your wrists! I feel your pain. My husband bought a canoe but I can't even go near it when it's sitting on the ground without feeling seasick and thinking it's going to tip over. No, the river bank is a safer and more stable place for me. Not a boater in any sense of the word.

I used to get carsick as a kid before the car left the driveway. I can get queasy in a swiveling office chair. No way could I get in a canoe. Just that picture of the water and the tip of the canoe up there, as if I were in the canoe, is enough for my weak stomach.

That's too bad that you both suffer from seasickness. Good thing we live in a world where you don't have to go out on the water if you don't want to. πŸ™‚

We have a summer house on Okanagan Lake, so we waterski/wake surf behind our ski boat all summer long. We have kayaks and SUPS as well.

I'm really sorry Ellie that your wrists still haven't cured. I guess we'll need more Warriors to pray for you.
Sorry I haven't sent you the letter in a while. I'm been so depressed these past few weeks, and I'm slowly loosing motivation in my life.

Hey, James! Just want to let you know you're in my prayers. πŸ™‚ Keep your head up, and in those moments when you feel the most lost or alone, remember God is right there with you. Sometimes He asks us to carry really heavy crosses, and we'll know why when we face Him on our dying day… But for now, just try to remember that youvare not alone in carrying your crosses; He is carrying your crosses with you, every step of the way. I'll keep praying for you, friend! Keep smiling!! P.S. You're words to Ellie are so beautiful: "We'll need more warriors to pray…" I love it!!

Thanks. I just want to let all the praying warriors know that I'm doing better right now, and that I am feeling happy again. I'll also keep praying in order to stop feeling depressed.
Thanks. I'm wanting to write a letter to the Duggars, but I'm still lacking in the courage and motivation to write it. Hopefully with more prayers I can do it.

I went canoeing last year and was terrible at rowing! Haha! I didn't like it at all but I'm glad I went once.

Sound like you had fun glad you made it back in time.

No I have never been canoe or kayaking before. And I never been fishing either. My parents weren't in to that stuff when I was growing up.

That sounds fun! I've never canoed but I love to kayak! Unfortunately, I've been having some issues with my wrists lately, too. I had to give up kayaking for almost a month. Now I wear braces when I kayak and haven't had any more issues.

My parents have both a canoe and kayaks and they prefer the kayaks as they are lighter and easier to get on top of the car. Kayak might be easier on your wrists too!

That's a good point. Kayaks would definitely be easier on my wrists, although then I would have to paddle the whole way instead of letting my husband do most of it. haha.

Used recreational equipment is often less expensive I you buy it off season. You can probably get a better deal on a canoe if you buy in the fall or winter.

We caught one. Trout (what we were fishing for) are notorious for jumping off the hook, so several got away…

That sounds like a lovely day!! Have you tried a chiropractor for your wrists? We have had great results and so has my mom and several friends.. If you can find a good one is a fairly inexpensive and non invasive way to go..hope that helps

Thanks for the idea. πŸ™‚ I've been to a physical therapist, which is similar to a chiropractor. It has definitely helped. At this point, I'm doing exercises and stretches recommended by the PT and waiting to see if the issue goes away. Perhaps I'll try a chiropractor in the future if I'm still having pain.

We bought our first canoe last year – had rented previously. We love it. We have been on a few weekend trips this summer and some day paddles. Worth every penny! πŸ™‚ I would definitely recommend getting your own, much more comfy.

Thanks for the recommendation. πŸ™‚ My back was getting a little sore just sitting on those wooden benches, but I know you can add more comfy seats. What kind of seats does your canoe have?
