Like a big portion of the United States, we have been stuck in our house for the better part of a week now. We have had several heavy snowfalls, as well as ice. Ice storms in the South are bad news. In my opinion, ice is much more dangerous than snow. At least snow provides a little traction on the road, but if you start sliding on ice, there is almost nothing you can do.
We have been hit with the double whammy of a sheet of ice with layers of snow on top. So you can’t see the ice, but it’s still causing travel to be treacherous.
Our temperatures have been below freezing since last Saturday, and it looks like we won’t see anything above 32 until this coming Saturday. Nashville doesn’t own many salt trucks because our snow usually melts within a day, so the city will continue to be a mess until the weekend. Up until yesterday, it was so cold that the salt being put on the roads wasn’t effectively melting any ice. The public works and metro police have repeatedly asked residents to say off the roads unless absolutely necessary.
With that in mind, we have not left the house since Sunday. Now I know that some of you have basically not left the house for almost a year due to the virus, which is very impressive. We are going a little stir crazy. Itโs amazing how simple tasks such as picking up groceries or doing drive-thru coffee can break up the routine. And being stuck inside is even harder when you know that everything is closed and there’s literally nowhere you can go.
We also realized during all of this that we don’t own a snow shovel. Like I said, anything beyond a dusting is pretty much unheard of around these parts. We are now to the point where we can’t see the grass, with more snow expected this afternoon. After the first snowfall, I went out with a shovel meant for digging holes in the dirt and used it to remove a big pile of snow from in front of our door so we could open it.
This has been Little Buddyโs first chance to see significant snow accumulation, so it has been fun to take him for walks around the yard. He is very much enjoying it. He also had his first opportunity to sled with Mr. Handsome. We used a boogie board, which is meant for the ocean, but it did the job.
Speaking of Mr. Handsome, his office has been closed all week, so he has been doing lots of woodworking and house projects. He is making some things for Little Buddy that I am looking forward to sharing with you. Being snowed in has been a special time because we have been able to eat breakfast and drink coffee (well, milk for Little Buddy) together as a family. Usually during the work week, everyone is just running around trying to get the day started.
How many of you are snowed in, and what have you been doing to kill the time?
Britt
I live in Kentucky and we were hit with 3 storms pretty much back to back including ice, sleet and snow. My family and I have been without electric since Monday. I love the snow but at this point Iโm ready for Spring.
Ellie
So sorry to hear that you lost power, Britt. How are you staying warm?

We have a kerosene heater we are using.

We received 16-18 inches of snow a week ago and 3-5 more inches on top a few days later. Today here in New York we received 3 inches and more to come Friday and Monday. We have done a lot of shoveling. The temperature s are freezing, too. Stay warm and safe.

I Live in Texas. My family as been iced/snowed in since Saturday. We are very blessed to have had power and water during this strom. So many people here have lost electricity and are having water problems as well it has been a nightmare for so many. The weather is supposed to be above freezing on Saturday so we should be begin to thaw out then. We have been doing our usual stuff. I homeschool my son so the strom has not interfered with that too much. We have had a bit more time all together as a family, which I have enjoyed. We are all looking forward to being able to get out some this weekend though.
Ellie
Yes, I agree, having power and water is a huge blessing. Some here have lost power, and it definitely sounds like a nightmare. Homeschooling for the win! ๐

Funny I just left a comment that much of the USA can e livelier and do more because of the climate. Now y’all know from experience! I guess the snow birds decided to share rather than just go down there this year!
Ellie
LOL!

In Canada we have just come out of the deep freeze! TOmorrow it is to be 3 degrees above zero Celsius so maybe a bit warmer than your cold weather. It will feel balmy to us as we had had a few weeks where we had -26 or more degrees C with windchills that made it much colder than that. I would still try to get out for a short walk or two but wearing a balaclava. Thankfully we haven’t had a lot of snowfall at once. Canadians are pretty hardy! Life proceeds like normal even with cold weather- people go to work, etc. Ice can be more dangerous than the snow! Especially without proper snow removal equipment. Maybe you should keep a shovel around for the future! LOL!
Ellie
Yikes! That’s cold! I’m definitely going to buy a snow shovel for future. Although I wonder if they even sell good quality ones in Tennessee. LOL

THey will prob all be sold out! Maybe on Amazon? ?? Ha ha!
Ellie
You’re right, they do have them on Amazon. I just looked. LOL! Overpriced, but that’s no surprise.

Were we live it has snowed a lot all Feb. (not for sure how many inches)! But we haven’t had any ice storms and we have salt trucks/ plows, so nobody I know of has been snowed in. We have been playing hockey on my in-laws pond, sledding, building snow igloos and making a lot of hot drinks! ๐ I do feel very bad for everyone who has been without power and water. My 6 year old has been praying diligently praying for those without power.
Ellie
Hockey sounds like a lot of fun! And I sure wish we had enough to snow to build an igloo. ๐
How sweet of your 6-year-old. You must be encouraged to see such strong faith at a young age.
