Thanks for the Ice Cream, Daddy, But I Still Like Mommy More

April 18, 2022 by 12 Comments

From Mr. Handsome:

A couple weeks ago, Ellie was too busy to grocery shop, so she made a Walmart pickup order and asked me to retrieve it. It had been a long day, and I could sense that she would enjoy a break, so I asked Little Buddy if he wanted to come along.

He replied, “No, Daddy, I would rather stay with Mommy.” I tried to convince him how much fun it would be, but he was clearly not interested. Really wanting to give Ellie a break, I resorted to bribery. “Maybe we can stop for ice cream after going to Walmart,” I whispered in his ear.

That did the trick, and he jumped into the truck, shouting “Let’s go, let’s go!” After picking up the groceries, we stopped at Sonic. (I know, I’m so classy.) Little Buddy got his own kid-sized hot fudge Sundae. It was a beautiful spring evening, and we ate our ice cream at a table outside. As I was soaking in the moment with my son, he started getting cold. “Mommy would have brought me a sweatshirt,” he stated. I knew he was right, as Mommy is always prepared.

When we returned home, Little Buddy ran inside to tell Mommy about his adventures and his ice cream sundae. “It sounds like you had fun,” replied Ellie. I smiled and waited for Little Buddy to say how much he loves Daddy. Instead, he stated, matter-of-factly, “Well, I would have rather stayed home with you, Mommy.”

I guess I learned my lesson, bribes don’t work on my son, which I suppose is a good thing.

This was beautiful! Children go through stages, and the attachment to Mom and the familiar routines of home provide a tremendous amount of security to Little Buddy right now. This will change as he matures.

Give him time. Then he’ll be all about his Daddy!🙂

Out of the mouths of babes. My son made it clear at age 2 or 3 that he liked Granny better than Mommy. That was to be expected. She got to have all the fun without (much of) the discipline. I liked her better too! LOL

Yeah, dads need to learn to be prepared for anything including sudden cold weather, rain, potty-training slip-ups, cuts and scrapes, anything. If a woman’s purse doesn’t have what’s needed to handle a kid situation, her car sure does. You need to carry a kit in your car, but let your wife pack it!!

Super sweet! My 91/2 year grandson called me and said, “Mamaw can you come down and watch me, mommy is going to the grocery store and I don’t want to go along.” 🙂

My boys have all been “mummy’s boys”. Sadly, it doesn’t last forever (it’s a good thing really). My three year old is still all about me but my big boys are now in a little gang with daddy. As they head off for adventures, it’s so cute to see them.

Aww, that’s fun for daddy! Bitter sweet for you as a mom, but good to see them growing and maturing.

They’re still “mine” as well! We often head out for our own adventures (among other things, I love to swim in freezing water – without a wet suit- and I’m training them up…) And then there’s the lovely “whole family” outings. That’s when I think: this is why I wanted a family!

Family outings are the best. What kinds of places do you swim? That’s impressive…I like my water to be warm before I’ll get in, LOL.

I swim in a local lake (it’s called Hampstead ladies’ pond) and also the parliament hill lido (Google them- they’re both lovely!) We swim 365 days per year and they’re both unheated! It’s quite the buzz!!!! Going for a swim really connects me to the bit of me that’s not a mother/ lawyer/ busy person!

I Googled them, and they are beautiful! I read a little bit about their history, and it’s very interesting. Winter swimming is definitely not for wimps, haha. What kind of law do you practice?

That’s cute Ellie! And that ice cream sure looks good. I think we might be Door Dashing Sonic. 🙂
