Painting with Mae and Lena

February 20, 2017 by 37 Comments

Mr. Handsome is the oldest of seven children. He and three of his siblings are finished with school and well into their careers, but the three younger girls are still working through their education. The two youngest, Mae and Lena, are in high school. As many of you know, Mr. Handsome is a hobbyist painter. (We are hoping to start selling his masterpieces soon, so stay tuned for more information on that.) For Christmas, my mother-in-law decided she wanted to buy Bob Ross oil painting kits for Mae and Lena, and she enlisted Mr. Handsome and me to help her pick out the supplies.

The girls were thrilled about their gifts and begged Mr. Handsome to give them a painting lesson. My husband patiently gave his sisters step-by-step instructions for about three hours, and their finished products turned out great.

Those are very pretty. My youngest daughter who is 16 loves painting and drawing. She would love doing this. Thank you for sharing.

Best to put her in a summer art class or camp, so she can learn from a trained, art educated professional

Thanks, Regina! Bob Ross tutorials are a great place to start. Classes are great, too, but those aren't always easy to find.

All three paintings are beautiful!! Mr Handsome is a good big brother taking the time to give is little sisters painting lessons. I am sure that his sisters enjoyed that special time with their big brother.

Thank you, Shela. 🙂 One of the first things I noticed about Mr. Handsome when we were getting to know each other was how well he treated his little sisters and how much they loved spending time with him. It's sweet to see!

What a lovely big brother…I love hearing about family closeness and kindness! My brothers are 9 and 12 years older than me, and when I was little I loved it when they spent time with me. Now we are all very middle-aged and still love each other dearly.

That's wonderful, Bee. It's funny how age matters so much when you're young, but then when you are all adults, it suddenly makes no difference who is older. Do your brothers live close to you?

Very beautiful! If you don't mind sharing this, what was the exact name of the kit, and about how much was it? Thank you, Ellie, for sharing!

      Hi,

It was the Bob Ross Master Set (http://www.bobross.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=R6510). The Bob Ross website has it for $120, but we found it for half the price at Hobby Lobby on Black Friday.

Why not? When you're done just throw it away. No laundry to do(though I love doing laundry!)and it's cheaper than buying a painting shirt.

Throw it away, where it will sit in a landfill for the next 1000 years? You don't buy painting shirts, you find one around the house that's already ripped, hopelessly stained, worn out…and then you make rags out of it when done, or hang it up for next time.

Oh my! Then there goes my trash bags for putting trash in! Don't be so negative for crying out loud! For all you know Anon they probably found another use for it before throwing it away. Good grief!

They can keep it and use it again. They don't have to throw it away after one painting.

He's definitely not qualified to be teaching the specifics of painting technique, medium, perspective, color theory. He's a beginner from my perspective from looking at his work. Best to put those girls in a proper art class/school

Yes he is he is a wonderful teacher. Why do you always have to make Rude and negative comments.

Maybe those giris don't want to be put in a art class they probably rather have their brother teach them.

It's a brother-sister bonding activity. He is not training them to be professional artists.

      Hi there,

We haven't found any painting/drawing books, but if you want to get started with oil painting, Bob Ross tutorials/kits are great. That's how Mr. Handsome started.

I am guessing but maybe the library would have books and videos on this topic and the internet must have this kind of stuff too. Mr Handsome and his sisters did a good thing to just get started, sometimes the bar has to be just a table and some supplies. If it is too high people never get up to it! There is always another time later to find out more, but what fun to just do it! Congratulations on your pictures!

Last night I made fudge. That would be a thing to do with young ladies (but maybe their dentist unce would not like that activity). I found a website to share
    http://oldtymefudgerecipes.com
I reduced the ingredients to half, used brown sugar, less honey for syrup, whipping cream for milk and added vanilla. It cooked to the soft ball stage and I beat it and it turned out perfectly in the pan. Then eating JUST a piece or two is almost impossible.

Try putting some teaspoons of organic ground ginger and a bit of vanilla it tastes fine and has a pleasant after effect for hours from the spice!(regards to the topic, all long sessions of arts and crafts must have some refreshments or meal too!)
