Lion Bares Its Teeth on Command

March 7, 2017 by 25 Comments

I think we officially have a thing for zoos. Last fall, we visited the Nashville Zoo at Grassmere and the New Orleans Audubon Zoo, and we recently took a day trip to the Memphis Zoo.It was a rainy and slightly chilly day in Memphis, but we’re very glad we braved the weather because the zoo was incredible. Our first stop once inside the gates was the lion exhibit. We stood there for a few minutes as the three lions (one male and two females) sat on the ground resting.

Just as we were about to move on to the next attraction, things started getting interesting. One of the female lions stood up to stretch, opening her mouth up wide.

She waltzed over to a viewing point on the other side of the exhibit. No one was there, but she seemed to be wanting some attention, so Mr. Handsome and I ran to meet her. She stood their patiently as we fumbled for our photos. We were literally just two feet away from her face.

She put her head down, almost as if she wanted to be pet. Don’t worry, we didn’t stick our hands through the bars.

I turned my phone onto camera mode and took a quick video (see below), during which she showed her teeth on command. Pretty neat!

She wasn't baring her teeth, she was yawning! All cats yawn like that. You were probably boring her, or you interrupted her nap, LOL!

Curious about those bars, and how close you could actually get your hand to them…or through them?? Are they electrified?

Surprisingly, we could have easily stuck our fingers through them. There was no sign, so it's unlikely they were electrified.

You might not have gotten your fingers back if you put them through… Wiggling fingers are pretty tempting for any type of cat!

The Memphis Zoo is one of our favorite zoos! We visited that zoo when we were touring Memphis. They have one of the best sea otter exhibits πŸ™‚

We saw the sea otters briefly, and it looked like a great exhibit, with room for shows. Did you watch a show?

I know, she looks like she would enjoy being pet, just like a domesticated cat. I'm sure she would make a comfy pillow too! Haha!

I was watching something filmed in Africa and there were fences around the little community to keep the lions out! (If I remember correctly that was on It's Supernatural this week.) Can you imagine that?! And that is what we are all warned about in the spiritual realm. Also I want to say that wild animals can be unpredictable there are various videos of wild animals being used as props for photos and suddenly attacking. It is always engaging and interesting to see wild animal or domestic animal videos. Thanks for the video you shared!

Glad you enjoyed the video. It sure would be frightening to live in a place with wild lions!
