Is This a Dinosaur Bone?

April 25, 2022 by 19 Comments

From Mr. Handsome:

Do we have a paleontologist in the building? Little Buddy and I were walking by a creek and found a rock that looks like a fossil. It looks like a bone from a foot, perhaps a metatarsal bone. Could it be an ancient fossil? Maybe a dinosaur, or a gorilla, or maybe just a man with really big feet, like myself.

Maybe it’s from an extinct creature that we don’t even know about. In that case, since we discovered it we would get to name it, right? I just asked Little Buddy what he would name a dinosaur that he discovered, and he said he would call it “Washer.” I am thinking this dinosaur probably had fantastic hand washing technique.

Unfortunately, Little Buddy tried to play with the rock and broke it, but I’m still curious what it was, if anyone happens to know. Do you guys think it is a fossil? If so, what would you name the dinosaur?

It’s fun to explore the outdoors. The fossil could be from a man with big feet or from a ape-like creature, Bigfoot. Washer is a fine name for a dinosaur, but I would name him Bolt.🦕🤣

That’s what I’m thinking, a metatarsal from something roaming the woods – bear, deer, fox, boar. The fact that it broke easily means it probably wasn’t fossilized, just decaying. There are online sites where you can upload your bone pictures and have someone try to ID them. Or try a Reddit “what is this thing” site. If you ever find out, let us know.

I have no clue of what it is, but I’ll go with a “Washer” bone! So cute!

Hmm, interesting. It’s fairly heavy, but I’ve never held a real dinosaur bone.
The little guy is doing great. Thanks for asking!

When do you think the dinosaurs became extinct; during the Moses flood or 65mln years ago?

To my knowledge, I don’t think there was a flood during Moses’ time. Maybe a small-scale one? But if you’re talking about the big one discussed in the Bible, that was Noah. As far as dinosaurs becoming distinct, I don’t consider myself to be an expert on the subject.

I think what they meant was does the church you attend adhere to the dinosaurs on the ark story.

I don’t think I’ve heard our pastor mention dinosaurs in a sermon before, and I don’t believe that dinosaurs are important enough to be mentioned in a church’s statement of faith, so I really couldn’t say.

Well that’s interesting because many Southern churches have set ideas about how old the Earth is and when dinosaurs roamed it. What about Ken Ham’s Ark Encounter? Do you agree with his ideas and Biblical interpretations?

I definitely find science interesting and I think it should be studied, but I don’t think dinosaurs should be an integral part of a church’s belief statement or a frequent feature point in sermons. The churches I have attended dont make it a major focus, but I suppose maybe there are some that do. Ken Ham has a separate organization in which science is the primary focus. We visited the ark encounter several years ago, but I haven’t really read much of his literature. right now I just don’t have the time, but maybe someday.

Really? I thought the person was just trying to be a jerk and instead showed his or her ignorance while Ellie showed grace and wit.

Hi, I’m the person who asked the question and I did not do so to be a “jerk”; which, by the way, is a swearword you call a man. I’m a woman. I’m genuinely curious as to other people’s beliefs. My question was prompted by something Ellie posted a few months ago about what kind of church she attends. Traditionally, southern churches are really outspoken about wether or not they believe in evolution, how old the earth is etc. For Ellie to say that she doesn’t care about that, is fine. So was my question.

Still feel the need to call me swearwords?

I don’t know anything about dinosaur displays in US. Forgive me. But I hope you can come to Alberta again some time and show your boys where you used to live and explore Drumheller, the voodoos, the badlands and the dinosaur museum sometime. It is such an interesting and exciting place for both kids and adults. Do you get books from the library? Maybe there is something in one of them that would help explain what was found? A reference librarian may help!

I would love to take them there for a visit! We also still have family and friends in the area, and I would love for them to meet my kids.
