The day after Thanksgiving, I jumped in the car at 8am to do a few hours of Black Friday shopping, and the first thing I noticed (aside from the frost on the windshield and the frigid morning air) was that quite a few radio stations had suddenly started playing Christmas music. We still had turkey and stuffing leftovers in the fridge and pie crumbs on the table, but Thanksgiving was over, and Christmas had officially begun.
Let’s get a discussion going about Christmas music. What are your favorite songs, and when do you start listening to them? My favorites are “The Little Drummer Boy,” “O Holy Night,” and “Do You Hear What I Hear?” I’m a traditionalist who doesn’t pull out the Christmas carols until the beginning of December.
Alicia Wilmes
My most favorite Christmas song is “Mary Did You Know” Absolutely love it!
Barb
Mine too. Amazing!!! I love to think about Mary and all she went through to give us a Savior.
Palmer
Yes Mary did you know is also my favorite
Evangelia
My favorite Christmas carol is “Hark, the Herald Angels Sing”. Other favorites are “O Come All Ye Faithful” and “Joy to the World”. I love Christmas carols so much, I often quote them on our photo Christmas card!
Grace
Those are my favorites too, Evangelia! 🙂
Michelle Epperson
I love the old traditional Christmas songs but I heard one the other day by Scotty McCreery that I fell in love with and it’s called Christmas in Heaven. I try to avoid listening to Christmas music until at least after Thanksgiving. It just doesn’t feel right to listen to it before Thanksgiving. But that is just my opinion.
I also love O Holy Night. I guess you could save it’s my very favorite.
Barb
My husband and I love to listen to Scotty McCreery. Do you know if that song is on a Christmas CD? Thanks, Barb

Mary did you know?
Barb
I think that’s the name of it. It is beautiful. I’ve only heard Josh Groban sing it.
Marilyn
Silver Bells is my favorite. I love that the radio stations are playing Christmas music already.
Barb
I have to admit I love the Christmas Hymns rather than the contemporary generic songs. Somehow “Oh Come All Ye Faithful” speaks to me of the season better than “All I Want for Christmas Is You.” I love “Mary Did You Know” best of the more contemporary hymns.
Benita
I don’t really have a favorite, but I played some Christmas music while cleaning today. Last night I binged on classic Christmas cartoons on youtube. Found some old ones dating back to the 30’s.
Ellie
Which ones did you find from the 30s? Those would be fun to see.
J
I don’t care for running the two holidays together so we don’t shop on Thanksgiving. Our tradition is to put up our tree on the Friday or Saturday after Thanksgiving and that is when our Christmas music starts. My favs are Little Drummer Boy, O Holy Night, Go Tell It On The Mountain and Run Run Rudolph!

darlene

Betsy
I’m a big fan of Christmas music all year round! 😊 O Come All Ye Faithful is my favorite carol.

Christmas songs might be OK to hear once a season, but the way the radio stations play the same songs over and over for a whole month is too much. That’s when I turn off the radio and break out CD’s of something else. How many times does anyone need to hear “Jingle Bell Rock” or that Alvin & The Chimpunks song?

All the time

I love all Christmas music! Can’t say I have a favorite…I am watching White Christmas right now and I am enjoying all of the music on that too. I enjoy hymns, classical and secular Christmas songs too. Do you remember Grandma got run over by a reindeer? Always makes me chuckle lol.
Ellie
I do remember Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer! My grandmother played it for us when we were little. She got a kick out of it.

We weren’t allowed to sing that song when I was growing up. It was considered a disrespectful song to our elders. And especially not in front of older people/grandparents.

God rest you Merry gentlemen by Mercy me. 🙂

I love all the Christmas hymns, but my favorite is “Away in a Manger” and “Silent Night”. A lively Christmas song that I like to listen to is “All I Want For Christmas is You”. I will listen to Christmas music on my radio the day after Thanksgiving… Jane
Diana
I love Christmas hymns best! The words are FULL of the story of Christmas, the focus of Christmas, the meaning of Christmas!!!
Some classic ones are great once in a while, the ones Dean Martin, Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole, etc. sang, like I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas, or Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire. Even Jingle Bells or those fun ones make me think of fun times.
We put up our tree the Saturday after Thanksgiving, and that is when the music begins. I really enjoy the time leading up to a holiday, so once Thanksgiving Day has passed, I feel perfectly ready to prepare for Christmas.
Rachael Brown
I also like “The Little Dunner Boy and Silent Night”.
Sandra
“The Little Drummer Boy” and “Do you Hear what I Hear? are my two favorites also. And I usually don’t start the Christmas music until the 1st of December too.
Vickie
Carol of the bells and oh holy night
Andrea Boggs
I’m a Christmas music junkie! My family we start Christmas music in June. I like the Classics and the new songs! As far as Classics goes my favorite is God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen and Hark the Herald Angels Sing and Oh Come All Ye Faithful. I also love the new songs. Couple of my favorites our Mary Did You Know, Labor of Love, and Strange Way to Save the World. My all-time favorite Christmas projects or the Martins and the Isaacs!
AmyRyb
I remember as a kid riding home in the car from our extended family’s Thanksgiving celebration and hoping to hear a Christmas song on the radio! Back then I think they played them once in a while with other Christmas songs, not for weeks on end. In fact, I think our one station only switched over to full Christmas music at noon on Christmas Eve, and then I was all in! But now that it’s everywhere, I still wait until after Thanksgiving and cringe when I hear it earlier in the stores! My traditional favorite is O Holy Night, but my modern favorite is Labor of Love by Jill Phillips. If you’ve never heard it, look for it–but maybe not until after you’ve had your baby! (Two kids of my own later, it makes me cry almost every time I hear it!)
Davina
‘As with gladness men of old’ was our school hymn and It’s still among my favourite Christmas Carols😊 I do like ‘O holy night’ too.
