Chipmunk Encounter

October 16, 2017 by 12 Comments

To help you conquer the Monday doldrums, I have a couple cute photos to share. As I mentioned in my post about Day 4 of our Canadian Rocky Mountain adventure, we were greeted by a curious chipmunk when we arrived at a breathtaking lookout point during an all-day hike at Lake Louise. (Don’t worry, we didn’t feed it.)The chipmunks in Banff National Park are often very friendly because they have grown so accustomed to humans. As a child, I remember sitting on a bench at Moraine Lake and being completely startled when a chipmunk crawled into my lap.

Have you had any interesting encounters with animals in the wild?

This is a true story. One day my mother was very depressed, my father had passed away, so she decided to take a walk on the road that runs by her house: she lives in the country. While she was walking and praying, she spotted an owl sitting on a rock by the edge of the road. She said his feathers sparkled like jewels in the sun's reflection. She walked over to him, and he allowed her to pick him up and stroke his feathers for a couple of minutes before he flew off. Moma said she just thanked the Lord for hearing her prayers, and the depression lifted.

Beautiful story. Thanks for sharing that. That truly was God letting your mom do that. Normally you couldn't do that with owls.

Oh no, when I see a chipmunk, all I can think of is the one that got down the dryer vent into my mother's dryer workings one time… She didn't know he was in there & she started the dryer. Had to call a repairman to remove "ground chipmunk debris." Cute, but they get into places they shouldn't.

St. Elmo, Colorado is an awesome place to go sit and feed the chipmunks. They will sit on your lap or hand and stay as long as you feed them. Huge number of them running around. So much fun for kids and adults too!

I try not to encounter animals in the wild if I can help it. But I did open the back door one night to take out the trash. It was a colder night than I thought, so I put the bag down outside the door & went back in to grab a jacket. When I opened the door just a few seconds later, there was a possum picking at the bag! He must have been right there waiting for his "take out" to arrive. We have possums and raccoons in this neighborhood, even though we are very urban. They are pests, and raccoon droppings carry diseases.

    That's actually a golden-mantled ground squirrel, not a chipmunk.

I was dog walking for someone in the country and saw lots of animals on my walks. I am sad that one day because of the convenience lifestyle we all want the forests and animals will become rare places and species.

Not everyone wants a convenience lifestyle.

When I use to go camping I would sat on a chair, put a peanut on my shoe and the chipmunk would come up and take the peanut off my shoe…Jane

My husband was sitting at an outdoor restaurant when a squirrel jumped on him and sat waiting to be fed. Freaked us both out.
