‘Monk’ Review

May 21, 2022 by 20 Comments

The television show Monk will always hold a special place in our hearts because it is the first show that Mr. Handsome and I watched as a couple. Having just married and moved to Nashville, we didn’t have many friends or much of a social calendar, so Adrian Monk became our friend. It may sound a little strange, but if you have watched the show, you understand how endearing of a character Adrian Monk is. The writers do a wonderful job at making you feel like you know him personally.

Tony Shalhoub puts on an incredible performance as Adrian Monk, a brilliant OCD detective in San Francisco, California. Monk suffered severe heartbreak following the death of his wife, Trudy, which amplified his OCD and caused him great difficulty coping with life. He tries to create order in his life by keeping everything perfectly clean and organized, to make up for the complete lack of control he felt when his wife died. I can relate at some level to this because I love an organized home, but I’m proud to say that I’m nowhere near as particular about it as Monk. His extreme eye for detail and order make him an incredible detective because he notices the details no one else thinks are important.

Now this may sound like a serious subject, a police officer dealing with debilitating OCD, but it is actually a comedy. Mr. Monk always seems to get into ridiculous situations that are absolutely hilarious.

There are eight seasons of this show, so if you like it, you will have something to watch for a long time. We own the full series on DVD, but you can also find it on Amazon Prime. A word or warning: when you finish watching the last episode, you will feel like you have lost a friend because you can no longer turn on the TV to see the latest adventure that Mr. Monk has gotten himself into.

Oddly enough, we finished our first run-through of the series the night before we moved out of the first home we lived in together. It was a very emotional episode to begin with, but it became more emotional because of the timing. Coincidentally, we watched the finale of a different TV series the night before Little Buddy was born.

‘All Creatures Great and Small’ Review

March 24, 2022 by 19 Comments

After posting about The Dick Van Dyke Show a couple weeks ago, we have had a lot of readers ask what other shows we enjoy.

The other show we are currently watching is All Creatures Great and Small. A few of you mentioned this one, but if you haven’t seen it, we highly recommend it. The show follows the adventures of a young veterinarian when he leaves the big city to take a job in the Yorkshire Dales of England. It is set in the 1930s and is based on the books written by James Alfred Wight under the pen name James Herriot.

There have been many books, films, and shows about James Herriot, but the one we are watching currently airs on PBS and can be purchased on Amazon Prime.

Warning: If you watch this show, you will fall in love with the Yorkshire Dales and be very tempted to drop everything and move there. (Mr. Handsome is currently trying to figure out if his dental license is valid in England.) The filmography is incredible, and the show is worth watching just to see the panoramic views of the hills and trees of the Yorkshire Dales. It really looks like paradise.

The acting is quality, and you really feel like you know the characters as friends. Anyone who has ever tried to prove themselves in a new town will relate to the city slicker James, as he tries to convince the country folk that he belongs among them. There is a great romance brewing between James and a local farmer’s daughter. James wants to win her heart, but she is engaged to the richest man in town, who also happens to own the farm where she and her family are tenants. Talk about pressure!

Interestingly, Mr. Handsome recently met veterinarian who chose his career after reading the original books. Based on the show, it is easy to understand how someone could be drawn to the life of James Herriot and his lovable small-town friends.

Our 60-Year-Old [Current] Favorite Show

February 18, 2022 by 59 Comments

We are constantly on the hunt for decent shows to watch after the kids go to bed, and our current favorite is The Dick Van Dyke Show. We don’t watch all evening, but it is very relaxing to “veg out” in front of the TV for an hour before bed, after a long day with a toddler and a newborn.

I picked up a DVD of the first season of the show at a used book store because Mr. Handsome’s parents recommended it. Mr. Handsome turned on an episode while I was in the shower, and I returned to find him rolling on the floor laughing. (Yes, he was literally rolling on the floor, but I think that was just for effect.)

It is exactly Mr. Handsome’s type of humor. I do find the episodes amusing, but the goofy humor just doesn’t get me like it does Mr. Handsome. I mostly enjoy the show because Robert Petrie’s son, Ritchie, reminds reminds me of Little Buddy, right down to his mannerisms and the way he talks.

There have been a couple episodes that we would say haven’t “aged well.” What I mean by that is that some of the jokes might be viewed today as politically incorrect. But aside from that, the show is totally clean and contains none of the violence or inappropriate content that is in so many of today’s shows. Well, we haven’t completely finished the series yet, but I would be shocked to come across anything of that nature.

So far, Mr. Handsome’s favorite episode is the one where Dick Van Dyke goes to the dentist…of course.

How many of you have watched The Dick Van Dyke Show? What are some of your favorite TV shows? We both also loved Downton Abbey but haven’t been able to find something similar that isn’t full of affairs and inappropriate content.

Madam Secretary

March 25, 2020 by 11 Comments

In January, I told you that we were about to finish the show Downton Abbey. We had really gotten into the characters and the plot and watched the last episode with heavy hearts. We had my brother-in-law over to see the Downton Abbey movie, and it was wonderful. For some reason, I had heard that it was a disappointment, but all three of us really enjoyed it.

Mr. Handsome and I are not big TV watchers, but we do enjoy sitting down together for a short show before bed. Not every night, but more often than not. At the recommendation of a blog reader, we started the series Madam Secretary on Netflix. We are only in the second season, but we are already hooked.

The main character, Elizabeth McCord, is a former CIA analyst who is appointed to the position of United States secretary of state. She is a phenomenal actor and plays the role well. The series is a political drama, with just the right amount of comic relief. The plot shows a combination of work life and family life, as Elizabeth tries to put her best foot forward as a high-profile politician, while fighting to prioritize her husband and three children.

Madam Secretary is rated TV-PG, and while it’s not a series that younger children would be interested in, it is appropriate for older teens, with parental guidance. The language is extremely mild, which is something that both Mr. Handsome and I appreciate greatly. The series premiered on CBS in 2014, with the final episode airing in December 2019.

Have you seen Madam Secretary?

Downton Abbey

January 20, 2020 by 86 Comments

A few days ago, I mentioned that Mr. Handsome and I had gotten into a new show and promised to write a post sharing the title. Did anyone guess Downton Abbey?

Mr. Handsome’s parents watched the series last year, and some of the other siblings did, as well. Everyone kept telling us how great it was (even Mr. Handsome’s father, which surprised us), so we finally decided to give it a try. And boy were they right. Downton Abbey is wonderfully produced, and the characterization and acting are phenomenal.

Unfortunately, we are almost finished with the last season, so I have to ask, do any of you have other recommendations for TV shows that are similar to Downton Abbey?

Modern ‘Little Women’ Review

September 27, 2018 by 16 Comments

Nearly 140 years after the release of Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women and 70 years after the premiere of the original film comes a modern version of the timeless classic. Four sisters, each with separate dreams and aspirations, navigate adolescence and early adulthood. Through trials, triumphs, and tragedy, they strive to remain true to themselves and loyal to each other.

Little Women opens in theaters nationwide tomorrow, and I had the privilege of pre-screening it. The story is a heartwarming one and is sure to have you laughing and crying along with the sisters. Jo (Sarah Davenport)  is the independent first-born who dreams of writing a best-seller. Meg (Melanie Stone) is the slightly misunderstood second-born who desperately wants to be a wife and mother. Beth (Allie Jennings) is a gentle soul whose love and support for her sisters never wavers. Amy (Elise Jones and Taylor Murphy), the youngest of the four and an artist from an early age, wants nothing more than to be seen as an equal by her three older sisters….

‘The Greatest Showman’

August 6, 2018 by 18 Comments

Finding quality, appropriate movies can be a challenge, but Mr. Handsome and I love having movie nights, so we look long and hard to find good ones. A few months ago, we watched The Greatest Showman for the first time and loved it. For those who haven’t seen it, the movie tells the story of P.T. Barnum and the Barnum and Bailey Circus. The circus ran for 146 years, from 1871 until 2017, and was advertised as The Greatest Show on Earth….

TV Show Review: ‘Murder She Baked’

February 1, 2018 by 68 Comments

Murder she baked

At the end of a long day, Mr. Handsome and I enjoy cuddling up on the couch and watching a wholesome, entertaining TV show or movie. We’re always on the lookout for new recommendations.

A couple years ago, I told you about the TV series Monk. You’re going to laugh when I tell you that we watched the first episode the evening of Mr. Handsome’s first day at his first job (just one day after flying in from our honeymoon), and we watched the last episode two years later (almost to the day), the evening before his last day at that job. It was a fitting way to close that chapter of our lives.

Back in early December, I was trying to come up with Christmas gifts for Mr. Handsome’s two youngest siblings, Mae and Lena, who are teenagers. (My husband is the oldest of seven, and it makes me so proud to see what a great role model, leader, and encourager he is for his two brothers and four sisters.)

Mae and Lena love the Hallmark series When Calls The Heart, as do we, so I decided to let them try out a new Hallmark series, Murder, She Baked. Based on a New York Times bestselling book series by Joanne Fluke, it takes place in the quaint town of Eden Lake, Minnesota. The main character, Hannah Swensen, owns a bakery, but she also becomes involved in solving murders when one takes place outside her shop.

I purchased the first two Murder, She Baked DVDs, and Mr. Handsome and I watched them before giving them to the girls, just to make sure they were appropriate. Not only were they appropriate, but they were also entertaining and lighthearted. We recommend them for teenagers and adults, as most younger children would not understand the plot.

Be sure to watch A Chocolate Chip Cookie Mystery first–that’s the pilot episode.

Movie Review: ‘The Resurrection of Gavin Stone’

April 25, 2017 by 13 Comments

Do you enjoy reading my movie reviews? Two weeks after screening Champion (in theaters May 19th) Mr. Handsome and I had the chance to screen The Resurrection of Gavin Stone, an inspirational comedy rated PG.

A former child actor who has allowed himself to be deceived by the empty promises of fame and fortune, Gavin Stone is sentenced to 200 hours of community service at a megachurch. He quickly becomes involved in the annual Easter production, through which Gavin learns what it means to be given a second chance.

Mr. Handsome and I thoroughly enjoyed The Resurrection of Gavin Stone. The acting is quality, the characters are dynamic, and the plot is both entertaining and meaningful.

Starring Brett Dalton (Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), Neil Flynn (Scrubs, The Middle), D.B. Sweeney (The Boxcar Children, 24), comedienne and YouTube sensation Anjelah Johnson (Mom’s Night Out) and professional wrestler Shawn Michaels, The Resurrection of Gavin Stone will be released on DVD and BLU-RAY May 2nd (trailer below). Look for a giveaway soon.

Movie Review: ‘Champion’

April 11, 2017 by 9 Comments

Over the weekend, Mr. Handsome and I had the privilege of screening the movie Champion, slated to hit the theaters on May 19th.

Rated PG, Champion opens as dirt track racer Sean Weathers (Andrew Cheney) is at the height of his career. A single parent to daughter Gracie (Faith Renee Kennedy), he has scores of fans and appears to be unstoppable. But when Sean allows a rivalry with another racer to shift his focus and take hold of his emotions, he finds himself in the midst of a tragedy and must fight to pick up the pieces of his shattered life.

In an unexpected turn of events, Sean meets Jack Reed (Gary Graham), a successful businessman who failed as a father. Sean must work to become someone his daughter can look up to, while Jack must learn how to forgive the person who robbed him of his chance to reconcile with his son.

We thoroughly enjoyed Champion, and we highly recommend it. The film illustrates the life-changing power of forgiveness, a message that desperately needs to be shared. Check out the trailer below, and look for a DVD giveaway in the near future.
