A good portion of our living room is currently being taken up by three massive corn plants–called corn plants because they look like stalks of corn, although they don’t actually produce corn. The above photo should give you an idea of how large the plants are and how large my belly is. Only four weeks to go until my due date! My wardrobe is dwindling.
We filmed the video below, which tells the story behind these corn plants, three weeks ago, when we had first brought the plants inside our house. Initially, I wasn’t super thrilled about bringing them in, due to their size and their ability to transport bugs. But I have since grown fond of them. All three have survived so far, although only one seems to be thriving, while the other two don’t look as thrilled about their new surroundings. When the warm weather returns in spring, we will relocate them back outside. What do you think of our new house guests?

Ellie: When are you do?
Ellie
First week of January. š
Federica
Ellie, get ready! š
When I was pregnant and due with my first, also the first week of January, I was told by several people that the baby would probably come past my due date. Well…he was 16 days early! All the Costco shopping, freezer cooking, cleaning planning went down the drain hehehe, but we welcomed a very healthy baby and it was a wonderful Christmas gift! I wish you all the best for a healthy end of your pregnancy, safe delivery, and of course, Merry Christmas!
Ellie
Hi Federica,
That would certainly be a surprise! I have been trying to stock up on food and pantry/cleaning items, but I have found myself going back to the same stores multiple times because I decide we just don’t quite have enough. I also love Costco. Out of curiosity, have you had any other babies, and were they early, on time, or late?
Ellie
Federica
Currently expecting #2, we will just have to see what he/she does! (Unlike #1, we decided to be surprised and not find out whether we are having a boy or a girl this time!).
Ellie
Congratulations, Federica! When are you due?

Your Bump is so cute on you, Ellie! The plants probably make the house pretty and tropical. Love it!
Ellie
Aww, thanks, Carol!

Ellie you look simply beautiful! I love corn plants and yours looks very nice. I had a corn plant back in the 80s but it got left at a friend’s house after I moved because I had no room at my new place.
I can’t get one now because our cat would chew on the leaves.
Ellie
Thank you, Regina! I can imagine these plants wouldn’t be ideal with a cat. They might even try to climb up the stem…

Oh I know she would. One time several months ago she jumped from the counter( she knows she is not allowed on the counters) in our kitchen to the top of our refrigerator!
Ellie
Oh my! Could she get down, or did she wail until someone came?

If they do make it, you’re not going to want those plants inside next year at this time, with a toddler around. While a dracena may not be one of the more toxic houseplants for humans, a child can still pull off a leaf piece and choke on it.
Meanwhile, humidity is what the plants need, not indoor dry heat. Misting daily will help, but that can ruin wood floors. It’s a trade-off. Basically, your house in winter is not the same as the tropics, where those plants would prefer to be.

How big is your living room? Just to have an idea of how much space they take up!
Ellie
We have them sitting right up next to each other, so they take up a space of about 1.5 feet x 4 feet, right in front of the windows. I’m not sure of the exact square footage of our living room. It’s a good size, but it’s long and narrow.
