We recently returned from a four-day road trip to the Florida Panhandle. This was our first vacation with two children, and while it was a lot of work, it went well. The seven-and-a-half-hour drive there was surprisingly smooth. Our stops only amounted to one hour, which I find to be impressive. We weren’t able to stop at Rodney Scott’s, Mr Handsome’s favorite BBQ spot in Birmingham, because it was nearing rush-hour, so we wanted to keep going to stay ahead of traffic.
We pulled off at a little hole in the wall barbecue joint outside Montgomery. The town was called Clanton, and its water tower was a giant peach. What would you think about having a giant peach in your yard (see photo above)?
The BBQ was fantastic–super moist and flavorful.

Little Buddy thoroughly enjoyed dipping pieces of ribs in the BBQ sauce.

When we finally arrived in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, and set up our condo, it was pushing 11:00. The condo was the size of some people’s living rooms, but it had a small master and bunk beds. I was unsure about having Little Buddy sleep on a bunk because he still needs a rail. I had purchased some travel bumpers made of memory foam in anticipation of the trip, and they worked great. They go under the fitted sheet. Little Buddy slept soundly on the bottom bunk. He did wake up a couple times, but that happens most nights a home, so we weren’t surprised.
There’s a famous peach water tower in South Carolina too. There are also giant watermelon, corn, and pumpkin water towers, and those are just the vegetables. There are other towers across the US that look like other items. You name it, someone has decorated a water tower to look like that.
Interesting!
A giant peach in your yard…
That’s what happens in the beginning of “James and the Giant Peach”! It’s a book by Roald Dahl and was made into a stop motion movie in 1996.
All I could think of is “James and the Giant Peach.” Hilarious book and I enjoyed reading aloud to my son a few years back!
Yes! I remember that book!
How fun! Super impressed with the few stops on the way down! Any tips for traveling with two? We haven’t attempted that yet.
For the oldest, we have an Amazon Fire that I download specific shows on. Then I turn the internet off so he can only watch what I approve. That keeps him busy, plus snacks and a few stops to stretch his legs. Sometimes we will stop at a park to run energy out. For babies, I think it’s important to just bring whatever you use at home (if you can fit it). I brought the stroller, his bed, and his doorway jumper. That allowed us to have places to safely set him down. Plus all the smaller essentials like blankets, etc. And a big beach blanket so he can’t eat the sand, LOL. For the car, I clipped soft toys onto his car seat.
Peach cobbler. Peach smoothies. Peach ice cream. 🙂I’m glad your little road trip went well. How did your youngest do on the trip?
He was actually the easier one, haha. We brought his stroller that reclines fully back, so he was able to nap everywhere we went. Little Buddy was a lot of fun, but he liked to keep busy.
I wouldn’t like people stopping in front of my house taking pictures, so no to a giant peach or whatever. As far as the food, the sloppier it is, the better!! We were at Ft. Walton 3 wks ago. I didn’t get in the water because of the jellyfish, so I just watched and listened to idiots scream in pain, including my family members.
I would of like to see a photo of the whole water tower.
Oh wow! Clanton is on my bucket list of places to go someday, because one of my favorite crafters to watch on YouTube has a craft store there!
That’s cool! What kind of crafting?
Paper crafting, like card making and mini albums. So much fun!
